⨠âBecause your joy is not a rewardâitâs your birthright.â
Black women deserve joy. Full stop.
Not because we worked 80 hours this week.
Not because we âhandled itâ one more time with grace and grit.
Not because we earned it through exhaustion.
But because we exist.
For too long, joy has been dangled in front of us like a prize we must hustle, suffer, or spiritually audition for. But sis⌠weâre flipping that narrative. Weâre not waiting on anyone to give us permission to feel good anymore. Not society. Not our jobs. Not our families. Not the struggle.
Joy is resistance. Joy is reclamation. Joy is ours.
And hereâs how weâre reclaiming itâwithout guilt, without apology, and without a single cape in sight.
đşđž1. Move Like Nobodyâs Watching (Because Theyâre Not Paying Your Copay Anyway)
Whether itâs a kitchen two-step, a BeyoncĂŠ full-tour reenactment, or a slow, sacred stretch before bedâmovement is medicine. You donât have to be graceful, you donât need fancy gear, and youâre not trying to âearnâ calories.
Youâre just trying to come home to yourself.
âOur bodies carry generational traumaâmove like your joy can rewrite that story.â
Soft, sacred, sweaty, or sillyâmake joy physical.
đ§đžââď¸2. Create Sacred Solitude
Solitude is not sadness. Itâs soul space.
Weâre constantly told that if weâre not answering the phone, attending the event, or showing up for somebody, weâre âacting funny.â Well guess what?
Sometimes funny = freedom.
Schedule time that is just for you. Read. Cry. Nap. Breathe. Do nothing. Let silence become a sanctuary, not a sentence.
đ đ˝ Petty Pause Alert:
If anyone calls you selfish for this, please refer them to Section 1 of your Petty Pause⢠deck entitled, âMind the Business That Pays You.â
đ3. Turn the Volume All the Way UP
Sound is healing. Sound is medicine.
Whether it's trap gospel, neo-soul, Meganâs latest freestyle, or a throwback Jill Scott playlistâlet joy echo.
Build a playlist that makes your shoulders bounce and your eyes tear up. Dance while washing dishes. Belt lyrics from your car like itâs your therapy (because it is).
đś Soundtrack Joy = Soul Fuel
You deserve a soundtrack to your softness.
Let the beat drop⌠and let the burden fall.
đ¤đž4. Link Arms with Joyful Women
You are not meant to heal alone.
Find the women who will giggle with you in Target, cry with you over FaceTime, and remind you that your joy is notnegotiable. Joyful community is not just cuteâitâs protective.
âSisterhood is resistance. Every shared giggle is a protest chant in disguise.â
Unfollow the folks who only show up for your struggle and surround yourself with the ones who dance with your joy.
đ¸ 5. Let Softness Be Your Power (Because Strength is Tired, Sis)
Weâve glamorized the grind.
Weâve been praised for how much we carry.
Weâve been told that being âstrongâ is who we are.
But strength without softness?
Thatâs not strength. Thatâs survival.
And weâre done just surviving.
You are allowed to cry, rest, pause, say ânot today,â and still be whole.
Softness is not surrender. Itâs strategy.
âBeing strong out of necessity is not the same as being strong by choice.â
â Sis, Put That Cape Down
đ Sis Note
You do not have to earn joy.
You do not have to apologize for needing softness.
You do not have to âdeserveâ peace to receive it.
You are allowed to laugh, rest, celebrate, and protect your peace like your life depends on itâbecause it might.
đŞ Reflection Question:
What does unapologetic joy look like in your lifeâand whatâs one small way you can practice it this week?
đ Joy is your right. Reclaim it, protect it, and celebrate it.
Pair this post with the Petty Pause Deck and keep that energy glowing every day.
